GLI Internships
Girls Learn International is seeking interns to participate in
a number of key research and program areas. Girls Learn International
Internships offer college students a unique opportunity to develop
an in-depth knowledge of global issues affecting human rights of
girls, and the status of girls' access to education in developing
countries. As Girls Learn International Interns, students will interface
with leaders in the field of women's and girls' human rights, as
well as educators around the world, and will participate in developing
and implementing programs aimed at involving American middle school
and high school girls in the efforts for global girls' education.
Participants in the Human Rights Education Internship will have
the opportunity to utilize this knowledge in the field, perfect
leadership skills and gain hands on teaching experience.
Girls Learn International offers summer and mid-term internships
as well as an ongoing Human Rights Education Internship. Internships
are unpaid, although modest stipends may be available on an as need
basis. College credit may be provided with approval of the academic
institution. Summer and mid-term internships may be based in either
New York City or Boston. Participants in the Human Rights Education
Internship will be based in a middle school or high school within
commuting distance to the intern's campus. Interns will report to
the Girls Learn International Program Director.

INTERNSHIP
Academic Year 2008-09
Internship: Human Rights Education
The Internship in Human Rights Education offers interns hands-on
experience in human rights education and facilitating the involvement
of middle school and high school students in the efforts for global
girls' education. At the outset of this internship, interns will
participate in a day-long training session during which interns
will become familiar with the principles of human rights education,
service learning initiatives and the Girls Learn International Program
for middle school and high school students. Each Human Rights Education
intern will be matched with a Girls Learn International Chapter
within a short commuting distance of the intern's campus. Interns
will work with the Girls Learn International Program Director and
the faculty advisor to the Chapter to create and implement lesson
plans, encourage communication between Chapter members and members
of the Partner Classroom, develop leadership and team-building skills
in Chapter members, and devise and supervise Chapter outreach activities.

Research Internship: Girls' Human Rights
The Research Internship in Girls' Human Rights immerses the intern
in an in-depth exploration of human rights issues facing girls around
the globe, the relevance of international treaties and local legislation,
responses of both state and non-governmental organizations to human
rights abuses of girls, and the preparation of "action alerts"
suitable for middle school and high school students. Interns will
also prepare a report on the status of global girls' human rights
in 2008. Girls' Human Rights interns will have the opportunity to
meet and/or consult with human rights activists and members of non-governmental
organizations engaged in the efforts for women's and girls' human
rights.
Research Internship: Global Girls' Education
The Research Internship in Global Girls' Education engages the
intern in an historical study of girls' access to education in developing
countries, an analysis of impediments to girls' access to and/or
completion of education, an examination of the efforts of the international
community, state and local governments, and non-governmental organizations
to close the gender gap in education, and the preparation of a report
on the status of global girls' education in 2008. Global Girls'
Education interns will have the opportunity to meet and/or consult
with human rights activists and international educators.
Internship: Chapter Development
The Internship in Chapter Development offers the intern practical
experience in program development and outreach and the opportunity
to interface with educators in middle schools and high schools in
the United States. Interns will participate in identifying potential
sites for Girls Learn International Chapters in middle schools and
high schools, initiating contact with potential Chapters, and working
with new Chapters to implement the Girls Learn International Program.
Chapter Development interns will also assist in the preparation
of teaching materials, lesson plans and advocacy and outreach projects
for specific Chapters.
Internship: Partner Classroom Development
The Internship in Partner Classroom Development provides the intern
with practical experience in international program development and
the opportunity to interface with non-governmental organizations
as well as educators in developing countries. Interns will participate
in identifying potential Girls Learn International Partner Classrooms,
initiating contact with potential Partner Classrooms, evaluating
whether potential Partner Classrooms meet the criteria for partnering
with Girls Learn International Chapters, and working with non-governmental
organizations and potential Partner Classrooms to facilitate their
involvement in the Girls Learn International Program. Partner Classroom
Development interns will also assist in the preparation of teaching
materials and lesson plans focusing on the social, political, economic,
religious and cultural makeup of communities in which Partner Classrooms
are situated, as well as the program developed by the Partner Classroom
to address the issue of girls' education in the community.
