Girls Learn International Partners and College Leadership Contribute

The Girls Learn International™, Inc. (“GLI”) College Leadership Division is designed to raise awareness of the crisis in global girls’ education on college and university campuses nationwide and to train the next generation of human rights leaders. Members of the College Leadership Division will help to bridge the gender gap in education through outreach, advocacy and education.

The mission of the GLI College Leadership Division is to:

  • Provide a forum for discussion, peer leadership and education
  • Raise awareness on campuses and in surrounding communities
  • Develop skills to become effective human rights advocates and;
  • Facilitate human rights education in local GLI Chapters through participation in the Human Rights Education Internship Program

Human Rights Education Internship Program

The Internship in Human Rights Education offers students hands-on experience in human rights education. The internship program provides college students with the opportunity to serve as facilitators and mentors to middle and high school students in GLI Chapters, as well as become researchers and advocates for universal girls’ education. Interns will work with the GLI Staff to foster cross-cultural communication, develop leadership and team-building skills in Chapter members, devise and supervise Chapter outreach activities, and provide comprehensive understandings of current human rights violations and obstacles facing girls’ education. Where possible, service-learning credit will be given. Internship applications are available on the GLI website. Internship descriptions are as follows:

Chapter Facilitation Internship

The Chapter Facilitation Internship offers students the opportunity to run a GLI Chapter in a local middle or high school. Interns will meet with the Chapter at least twice a month for one hour to engage students in learning about universal girls’ education and human rights, advocacy, fundraising and communication with the Chapter’s Partner Classroom. Interns will be trained on the GLI Program Model and will facilitate GLI exercises with the Chapter members. This internship requires that students be available for at least one full semester.

Chapter Site Visit Internship

The Chapter Site Visit internship offers students an opportunity to meet with various GLI Chapters as guest speakers on girls’ education and human rights. Interns will be trained in four GLI Program Exercises. This internship requires that students be available for at least one full semester to visit local middle and high school Chapters.

Girls’ Education Research Internship

The Girls’ Education Research Internship opportunity engages students in a range of issues relating to girls’ education and human rights. Research interns will maintain accurate and current information regarding the status of girls’ education within the Partner Classrooms and countries and conduct research on specific obstacles to girls’ education. Research interns will also develop comprehensive middle and high school friendly guides to assist students in fully understanding human rights violations and the struggle for universal girls’ education in countries around the world.

GLI College Chapter

Students may start a GLI College Chapter on their college or university campuses. College Chapter members learn about human rights, advocate for universal girls’ education on campus and within the local community, and fundraise for GLI Partner Classrooms. College Chapters host awareness raising events, sponsor guest speakers and seek to engage other students in the struggle for universal girls’ education. College Chapters will be provided with all GLI Program Materials and assistance from the GLI Staff.

Summer Internships

Opportunities are also available for GLI internships during summer and mid-term vacations. Where possible, service-learning credit will be given.
