GIRLS LEARN INTERNATIONAL - OVERVIEW

  • Girls' education is a fundamental human right, guaranteed in The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in a succession of international Conventions, Declarations and Affirmations.
  • The enforcement of the human right of girls' education is essential to uphold the standard of universal education.
  • A society in which girls are guaranteed access to quality, non-discriminatory education will reap the social, economic and political benefits associated with a population of educated women.
  • Despite the fact that education is a universal human right almost 2/3 of the world's uneducated children are girls.
  • Girls Learn International's mission is to involve young women in developed countries in a service learning initiative to support global girls' education.
  • Girls Learn International is a national not-for-profit organization with Chapters forming in middle schools and high schools.
  • College students may participate as Chapter facilitators as part of the Girls Learn International College Leadership Division.
  • Each Girls Learn International Chapter will be matched with a Partner Classroom situated in a community in which girls have traditionally been denied access to quality education.
  • The Girls Learn International Program provides human rights education to participants in Girls Learn International Chapters.
  • The members of Girls Learn International will engage in the process of critical thinking, issue framing, planning and action, providing them with a framework for problem solving essential to good leadership.
  • Participants in Girls Learn International will engage in community outreach projects to provide financial and other support to Partner Classrooms.
  • 100% of the monies raised by Girls Learn International Chapters will go to the Partner Classrooms.
  • Communication between participants in Girls Learn International Chapters and girls in the Partner Classrooms will foster international dialogue and multi-cultural understanding.

Participants in Girls Learn International will help to empower their counterparts in communities in Partner Classrooms with the human right of education, and will themselves, in the process, become positive agents for social transformation.
